Sowing 2009

On our farm we sow crops of Wheat, Oats and Barley in the cooler months.... This year we're sowing Wheat seed that was harvested from our farm last year. We usually sell our seed, if the price is right, and only keep a small amount on farm for sowing the following year...
We were dry sowing (sowing into ground that had no moisture) this year in a hope that we would get rain.... That was until 3 inches fell Thursday last week right in the middle of sowing which resulted in this....
DH getting bogged to the Axel.....
After a lot of digging and a hell of a lot of pulling (by a much bigger beefier tractor mind you) we finally got out of the bog hole and DH was on his merry way again.....
Hopefully there won't be too many more moments like these this sowing season as we still have 1600 of the 2000 acres to sow before the end of this month with a lot of rain predicted along the way.... I'm not complaining though, this amount of rain is a Godsend!!!! It means our crop will definitely come up now and we'll have either sheep feed or a crop to harvest, it all depends on the follow up rain.... Fingers crossed things work in our favor this growing season and this dry paddock (well at the moment very moist paddock... LOL!!!) turns a nice shade of green....

  6. The Joys of Farming! I hope it all goes well. *grin* I just read Chookys comment then! Didn't intend to double up!
We only have about 100acres arable and in smaller sections; so it's nice change to see larger flatter farming areas!

  8. Fingers crossed that you are able to get the rest of the sowing done without too many more hickups! Must say the rain is goo - a little more would be great too! Hopefully it holds off until you have the seed in and the ground has settled a little

  9. I hope you get all your pastures seeded in time. I wish we would get some decent rain here too so our lawns and trees would turn green. So much is dying in gardens right now it just looks horrible. It looks as though your daughter is going to be a future farmer too.

  13. Your sowing progress is looking very similar to my sisters, check her blog The Farmers Wife at http://donna-thefarmerswife.blogspot.com/ . Not too far from where your mum lives. Fingers crossed for follow up rain later in the year.

  14. I've never seen a tractor bogged like that before - so glad you had rain though. We live on the Darling Downs in Queensland and my Dad will be planting winter crop for the first time since 2002 with the lovely rain he received last week. Here's hoping for lovely followup rains during winter.

  16. It's very dark and showery here today with rain predicted for the rest of the week. We only had 6mm of rain for the whole of May - farmer hubby was getting very worried again!! We finished sowing on Saturday night after 5 long weeks - yeah!!! Please let it be a bumper year for all the farmers! The kids have a fabulous life growing up on the farm - so free!
