pre-loved chairs

I'm not an overly wealthy person and must admit, most of my home has been furnished with 2nd hand and preloved furniture over the years... In the beginning it was pure necessity as I purchased furniture from op-shops and clearing sales to fill my home as my budget couldn't afford new shiny pieces... But now, some 16 years down the tract (since I left home that is), my needs have changed and my family has grown. I am still a very budget conscious person and my love of recycled tressures has grown more than words could purely explain. I love the eclectic collection of furniture that I am able to give a new lease of life to and the warm home-y feel that it gives my rustic county home.... I am proud to know that most of the pieces in my home had another story to tell before they came to tell a story in mine. I celebrate these stories and share them with family and friends as often as I can.

The latest pieces to bring a new chapter to the story in my home are 5 pre-loved chairs. I was lucky enough to purchase these chairs from a clearing sale for $5 just over 2 weeks ago - yes that's right, $5 for the lot!!! 2 older style high-chairs and 3 turned timber stools.

Each chair has been tested by each of my little people...

But, it's my littlest person of all who has claimed this vintage high-chair, and it fits him just right - don't you think?

Now, onto the bread - it truly is a wonderful thing, is it not?

My love of its delicious, chewy, home baked, goodness has grown even stronger this past 5 weeks as I dive deeper and deeper into the world of Sourdough Baking.

Thanks to a cast iron pot, a super hot over, and a thriving starter I am producing artisan bread    E V E R Y D A Y!

And everyday it's new and different and exciting....

But the most exciting thing of all is the crumb - it's airy and chewy and tangy and simply delicious.
A 'crumb' shot of todays Sourdough.... #sourdoughbread #cantstopbaking
So, are you buying pre-loved furniture out of necessity for your family or you do it for the passion?

Or, have you started a Sourdough journey, like me? For so many years I was too scared to start and then one day (5 weeks ago to be exact) I simply dove in, gave it all I had, and haven't looked back!!!

Happy Tuesday Friends...... xxx

  2. I'm buying pre loved furniture to save money and fill my home with items that are just perfect for the space they end up in! My latest purchase.........a solid wood wardrobe for just £100! I plan is to use it in my new home.........the cost of a carpenter making the equivalent as a fitted wardrobe would of been at least 4x that figure.

Your bread looks yummy.........May I ask you for your recipe? Have just discovered your blog and love it.......keep up the good work x.

    1. Your latest purchase of a solid wooden wardrobe sounds simply perfect! - aged furniture adds such character to a home.

As for my bread, I don't really have a recipe as such... I just combine 1kg of any flour with 950ml of liquid. The liquid portion usually contains between 200 and 300ml of starter.

      Thanks for popping by... xx

  3. Hi Jodie, just thought I would give your blog a quick visit after you so kindly visited mine, and a scroll through your last few posts revealed your absence from blogging and the reasons why. I'm sorry you were harassed and stalked like that, it's inexcusable!

The human race can be so uplifting at it's best, and down right ugly at it's worst!

You have a beautiful blog here, the photos are particularly lovely. I can't believe you got those beautiful chairs for $5!!! they are gorgeous. Got to love a good bargain :)

    1. Thanks for popping by Cheryl! - I'm a crazy 'bargain' shopper and can never simply let gorgeous pieces of furniture and nic-naks be left to rot at clearing sales... xx

  4. For a long while, I've only bought furniture at sales (apart from beds and sofas) and love the thrill of the auction as much as the purchase. There's something special about bringing it home, cleaning it up and wondering who used it before. Also, it runs contrary to the Must Have Now culture of today; some days you win, others you don't.
You have a beautiful shine on your bread. I love baking sourdough loaves as the dough is very forgiving.

    1. Oh the thrill of the auction, I do love that too Anne...

Sometimes my bread shines, some times it's dull - I'm still not sure exactly why it does this, maybe something to do with the flour when dusting before baking or maybe even the moisture in the oven when I'm baking...

    1. Thanks Theresa, they sure are...

Yes, I do make my own starter for my bread. I made my first (and only) starter back on the 20th of September and it's still going strong - fingers crossed... I can't remember the exact recipe that I used but do know that it was just plain white flour and rainwater, equal quantities I think... I do remember 'googling' it and finding hundreds of recipes and just following the one that suited the ingredients that I had on hand.

      I hope this helps.

  7. I love the story of your furniture. Our story is similar, firstly as a necessity but now a passion. We hav a motley crew of chairs as well, mainly bentwoods of all different designs. A collection started with my grandfather's bentwood armchair. They are all a bit rickety, but have loads of character. Good on you with your bread baking. With only two of us it isn't all that viable, but I did have a go one day, which was great fun.

Oh Janice, the bread is amazing... Having baked bread for my family for many years, who would have thought there was an easier and much more delicious way and it was the 'sourdough' way...

  9. I'm jealous of your chairs, they would go great with my pre-loved kitchen table. I was fortunate to inherit a round oak pedestal table from a beloved great aunt. I only have four chairs but with the leaves in it the table can accommodate 8. But my most prized piece of furniture I got from my grandmother. It was her mother's old Singer treadle sewing machine. My great grandfather bought it for her in 1901 and it was brand new. I learned to sew on it when I was 11. My husband and I have been married for 37 years and the only new furniture we ever bought was our new bed 5 years ago and my husbands recliner. The only reason I bought the recliner was he had broken his leg, was in the hospital for 3 months and when he came home he couldn't navigate stairs for another 2 months and I only had two days to get the house safe for his homecoming. And I was working 10 hrs a day 7 days a week for this whole time. ;-). He has always been a trial but I love him. At least he waited until our fourth grandchild had arrived. From the back your little one looks like him.

  11. Isn't making sourdough bread a wondrous thing? My starter is around 2 years old and it has survived some neglect on my part by it stil produces lovely chewy bread with that great tang. It changes its flavour depending on the time of year and how active I've kept it going.
